Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

What is the implant process like?

At Union Dental Center in Havre De Grace, our dedicated staff begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical and dental history, and Dr. Friedman conducts a full exam of the mouth and area surrounding the missing tooth, including x-rays. Once the exam is complete, Dr. Friedman talks with the patient and makes recommendations for a comprehensive treatment plan. After answering questions and receiving input from the patient, the process begins as implants are surgically placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia.

The amount of healing time is different for each patient and depends on variables such as the quality and quantity of bone, as well as the type of implant placed. When Dr. Friedman determines that the patient has healed adequately, he will use the implant to support a crown, bridge, or denture—completing the process.

For more information about the dental implant procedure or to make an appointment, call Union Dental Center today at (888) 779-4226.

Are there different types of dental implants?

The American Dental Association accepts two types of dental implants: the endosteal and the subperiosteal. Most dental implants placed today are endosteal root form fixtures (similar to a man-made tooth root), though Dr. Friedman will assess your unique needs. One factor that he will take into consideration in selecting the right type for you is whether your jawbone can adequately support the implant. This can be determined through an exam.

For more information about the types of dental implants and which one may be best for you, call (888) 779-4226 today for an appointment with Dr. Friedman in Havre De Grace.

How many dental implants will I need, Dr. Friedman?

Dental implants are ideal for patients who need one or more teeth replaced, but the exact number of implants will be determined by Dr. Friedman during the initial exam and included in the treatment plan. Typically, however, one implant is placed for each tooth that will be replaced.

Some of the factors that go into the decision about the number of implants include the quality and quantity of the patient’s bone and the existing anatomy of the bone. Financial considerations are also a factor for some patients. But because we believe that all of our patients in the Havre De Grace area should have the smile they’ve dreamed of, at Union Dental Center, we’re committed to offering payment plans that work with your budget.

Our goal at Union Dental Center is a completely successful procedure, which includes placing enough implants to secure the restorations needed for a healthy, whole smile. It’s a waste of time and money to have an implant fail due to an inadequate number of implants being placed to support the teeth. Dr. Friedman and the friendly, experienced team at Union Dental Center will develop a plan that takes into account your individual needs and resources.

Don't Forget to Floss!

Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Decay-causing bacteria can hid between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gum line.

Visit Our Office Regularly!

Take good care of your smile. Remember to visit the dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Mouthwash Is Important, Too!

Brushing and flossing may not be enough. The ADA now recommends using an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce plaque and prevent gingivitis.
